ONOMATOPE オノマトペ (2025)
flute and percussion
The piece is an experiment to notate with purely using onomatopoeic words to prompt the musical gestures through performers imitation and personal associations. The list of onomatopoeia used in the score are drawn from a documentation of two musicians, Anita Chandavarkar & Kosuke Matsuda, who were asked to listen to their surrounding environment and write one onomatopoeia everyday for a week. Through this documentation, the process reflects how some expressions are language-specifics and reveals cultural values in relation to the words that exist to describe particular sounds. Using seven words documented through each performers’ sonic perspective, the work explores a dialogue that parallels the sounds of animals, machines, natural environment, and human voices.
